Whitewater Canyon rises with sheer walls over the rushing waters of Whitewater Creek below. Most people seek out Glenwood, NM for a chance to hike the Catwalk National Recreation Trail. The views from Gold Dust Trail make the Catwalk pale in comparison. Although they are two different hiking experiences, very little compares in this area to these craggy rock walls carving sharply through space to the roar of water below. The pinyon pines and juniper clinging precariously to their holds in the rock. Stellar Jays soar from branch to branch. The views are expansive. This place will make you feel awe.
The parking area has plenty of capacity, with room for horse trailers. There's a somewhat ominous sign at the start, declaring "Trail Not Maintained Difficult to Find." Unless a hiker were truly inexperienced, disoriented or one toke over the line, this trail is discernible and easy to follow.
From the entrance gate, make an immediate left. If you can't see the starting point, use AllTrails for reference. Although I always recommend downloading the app, this area had a surprising amount of service.
You climb gradually over switchbacks, gaining sweeping views of the valley below and surrounding mountains. Whitewater Canyon makes it appearance after about 0.7 miles. From here you skirt the rock wall with minimal exposure. The trail then dips into a ravine. Keep in mind, that these dry ravines can become dangerous during flash flood conditions. So always be aware of the weather above you and in the surrounding areas that feed into these waterways.
From the ravine, you climb gaining further views of Whitewater Canyon. At about mile 2, there is an optional descent in the canyon, which is steep and rocky. This will connect to the Whitewater Trail linked to the Catwalk National Recreation Trail.
If you're not up for the descent and subsequent climb up. I highly recommend stopping here and heading back. You can always make the short drive to the Catwalk Trail and enjoy views of the slot canyon from that perspective.
Overall, this was a hidden gem. I took a chance on this trail not knowing what to expect for views. It was phenomenal. Of note, on 01 JAN 2026, there was a substantial amount of scat on the trail that appeared to belong to a combination of black bear and coyote. Always be safe out there.
