Living in the Chihuahuan Desert gets dry. The sun seems to shine too often, too bright, and the dusty glare of the Franklin mountains on baking days makes you wish for the reprieve of a single day of showers.
There is water near El Paso. You just have to know where to look and have a liberal definition of "near." If you're from TX, a 2 hour drive to a gorgeous water source shouldn't be more than a jaunt.
Enter Tunnel Vista Falls: A 0.5 mile out-and-back trek that takes to the base of a year-round flowing waterfall and oasis. Getting there is the trickiest part. Enter in "Tunnel Vista Observation Site" into your GPS, and it'll take you up a winding road through canyons to a large pull-off site. Jump out of your vehicle and admire the view - this is important.
Now for way-finding. Turn towards the tunnel and the yellow sign stating "Lights on For Safety." Walk towards this and parallel the pipeline on your left. If you have small humans in tow, keep them close as traffic flies out of the oncoming tunnel. Now, search the concrete barriers beside you for the official turn-off sign - a red graffiti arrow. Jump the barrier here.
You will now climb down gradually and parallel the rock wall to your right. There will be minor drop-offs to the left so watch your step. But don't forget to turn around a few times and admire that view down the canyon.

Keep descending and the elusive sound of water will gradually grow louder. Follow it. If you've been stuck in the desert long enough, how can you not?
You'll cross the creek once. Be careful with your steps here as the rocks have been worn smooth through natural erosion and our footsteps. Follow the water. And then you'll see her - Tunnel Vista Falls flowing strong into a deep green pool.
Stay here a while.
